The 2018 vintage in Montalcino was, without doubt, a year which will grow over time
The vintage put most of our winemakers to the test, it was certainly difficult for the Montalcino producers who took on the beloved Big Sangiovese.
The vintage was characterised by a mild and rainy winter followed by a rainy spring. After years of fairly balanced and dry and arid weather 2018 had a lot of rain which created generous, full bunches of grapes.
At the end of February a cold spell arrived from Northern Europe which brought the temperatures down to minus 8 or lower in the wine production areas.
The budding was in line with the weather conditions and didn’t cause any particular problems.
From the end of March there was no more risk of frost which allowed vegetative growth in the vines.
As forecast Spring was decidedly wet which consequently created problems in the management of the foliage and fungal infections in the vineyards.
Many treatments were needed and steps were taken in order to ward off the advancing mildew. The hard word didn’t bother the true wine-makers who love their land and will do anything to defend the fruits it provides.
Summer was splendid from the meteorological point of view; the hot, sunny Mediterranean month of July brought a breath of positivity to the more sceptical producers who were under a lot of pressure after the previous years’ vintage.
Also August was Mediterranean and quite regular with peak temperatures which weren’t worrying and which, in fact, allowed a regular trend with the phenological maturation of the vines.
September saw big thermal changes, by no means a negligible phenomenon for any self respecting vintage.
A little rain in the second half of September obviously couldn’t be missed, the final bugbear that no producers ever wants but which is always so well managed by the producers in Montalcino.
This definitely divided the producers in the different time windows of the harvest. Some plots were harvested slightly early around the fifteenth to the twentieth of September, others were harvested at the end of September or in the first two weeks of October in order to achieve the technological and phenological maturity required.
The 2018 vintage is however a fairly rare vintage in the panorama of Italian viticulture.
A year which is remembered for the balanced temperatures and the uncertain seasonal trends, often rainy, typical of the 90’s; years during which great wines were produced that we may still enjoy today.
After the great frost of 2017 the plants have come back in the best possible way producing not only great quantities with generous bunches, rich in material but also optimum analytical value when they enter the winery.
The regular climatic trend was surprising and very positive during the year, a phenomenon which we are sadly seeing less often these days.
The wines tend to be slender by nature but present good aromatic thickness, extremely elegant on the palate giving immediate pleasure.
Above all the challenge will be to see how they age, we have no doubt at all that wines that have been interpreted in the best manner can still be fun after ten years and more than equal to other more widely spoken about vintages.
Among those whom we reward this year for interpretation of the vintage and precision of execution there are two wines from the same producer: Siro Pacenti extracts the most nobility it’s possible to extract from his wines producing Pelagrilli and Vecchie Vigne 2018, both of which are extremely exciting.
Piero is in second place with the single vineyard Talenti (a perfect wine in the 2015 vintage) and in 2018 a perfect marriage between freshness and crunchiness, decidedly Mediterranean and savoury.
The hegemony continues with Casanova di Neri, Tenuta Nuova, amazing, always dynamic and juicy, often with traces of graphite which veer towards hot and spicy sensations.
The territorial expression which is extremely noble is from a young debutante, the Giovanni Neri label, a wine Giovanni has long wished for, directed in the cellar at Casanova di Neri, it shows the personality of only a select few.
Filo di Seta from Castello Romitorio is a sure thing. The use of wood in this winery is absolutely unique. The work behind it is of an emotional, exciting nature. The care of the vineyards and the richness of the ecosystem on the Northern slopes of Montalcino is an added advantage.
Fuligni is in the Top 10 for the fifth consecutive year. Obviously not by chance. A centred wine which blends a fruity character with wide, spicy aromas in the best possible manner.
Huge applause goes to two producers who have appeared in our Top 10 for the last three years; Cortonesi and Cava d’Onice. They produce exciting wines and we are sure we haven’t yet seen the best from these wineries who have been brought into vogue by two young, talented chaps; Tommaso Cortonesi and Simone Nannetti.
During the tastings in our office at the Osteria dell’Oca Satolla we also took an indepth look into the 2020 vintage by tasting around 50 Rosso di Montalcino wines.
Rosso di Montalcino 2020.
The vintage is close to the 2018 in terms of juiciness and harmony in the matrices but could have a slightly superior potential in its refinement thanks to the crunchiness and the enormous territorial expressiveness which immediately shows itself in a wine with great personality. Not least our vision of an absolutely atypical vintage, the year that brought everybody to a halt with the forced lockdown. The World stopped, the producers could manage their vineyards without commercial engagements, the world could breathe again with factories and industries closed, and this certainly added an appreciable value to the genuinity and harmony of the wines produced.
A new reference in the category stands out, produced by Castello Romitorio: Colto is a Rosso di Montalcino that shows muscle and power yet shows an impressive precision of execution which takes it to the next level. Iacopo, the Rosso di Montalcino produced by Il Marroneto confirms its place as a leader in the category and shows off a gracefulness and impressive length through to a winning closure.
Great work by many producers who have raised the bar in terms of the quality of Rosso di Montalcino quite significantly. Participating in this change are; Talenti, Pietroso, Cortonesi, Fattoi, Poggio Antico and La Palazzetta.
Between the 2017 Riserva wines tasted two particularly stood out; Mercatale Riserva produced by Ridolfi and Anemone al Sole Riserva 2017 produced by Corte Pavone. The ‘late release’ 2016 Il Divasco from La Rasina is worth a note, it has elegance to sell, also the Riserva Diecianni from Le Chuise which is out on the market with the 2013 vintage.
Following are all the notes on the wines tasted:
