The 2021 tastings end with 4483 Italian labels reviewed.
Tuscany shines with 80 labels in the Top100 thanks to two extraordinary vintages in Montalcino, 2015 and 2016.
Infact 2021 was the year that the Brunello di Montalcino 2016 and the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 were sold on the market.
There’s much more however in this single region of central Italy; the most famous and envied region in the world.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and Bolgheri Superiore released principally the 2018 vintage on the market. Very hard to manage, this elegant vintage divided the national and international press but won many awards in the end thanks to the harmony and dynanism of the matrices produced.
Valdarno di Sopra and Super Tuscan presented primarily however the 2019 vintage to the press, exceptional quality and optimum production levels left everyone really enthusiastic about the work done during that year.
The podium is entirely Tuscan.
For WinesCritic.com the first place goes to Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015, a perfect wine, beautiful to drink now but will continue to grow and give pleasure over time. The hot, generous year allowed the poliphenolic components to mature perfectly making the wine pleasant from the start uniting material and persistence in every sip.
In second place on the podium another perfect Tuscan wine is San Giusto a Rentennano Toscana La Ricolma 2018. La Ricolma is a pure Merlot from a single vineyard of about one hectare. The incredible work of Luca Martini di Cigala produced an exciting wine during an incredibly difficult year due to the fungal diseases in the vines from April until July.
In third place a wine which continues to write the history of Italian enology, Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri-Sassicaia Sassicaia 2018 is a wine which touches perfection of execution in it’s linearity and pleasantness. One of the coolest seasons of the last ten years in Bolgheri produced a very elegant wine which blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
If Fuligni Riserva 2015 and La Ricolma 2018 are symbols of Itallian craftsmanship – small productions, inspired and territorial – Sassicaia is equally so, producing very high quality wine thanks to the work of a close-knit team and hundreds of tastings throughout the year. Different tonnellerie, woods of different seasons and different ages are cared for like a tiny production.
Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Suolo 2016 is the wine that has grown most over the last years in Montalcino. We find it in fourth place after winning a really important award a few days ago from Gambero Rosso naming it red wine of the year.
Becoming a Brunello di Montalcino in 2015, in the past the grapes destined for its production ended up in the Brunello vintage and the IGT.
On a South-west facing slope, 320 metres a.s.l and between 50 to 70 years old the Vigna del Suolo is matured in Taransaud barrels and has energy and character to sell. It only took a couple of years to get noticed thanks to the intuition of the director and enologist of Argiano Bernardino Sani and his team.
Ceniprimo Gran Selezione is the best Chianti Classico ever produced by Barone Ricasoli, coming from the great work done in 2016 with a dizzying vibrant acidity. The invisible line takes us back again to Gaiole in Chianti, a territory that is happy to produce Sangiovese and Merlot and is at the top of our classifications.
Giodo produces it’s best Brunello di Montalcino. Yet again the South-westerly slope exalts in the balanced, mediterranean year. Great work by Bianca Ferrini, a figure with a great personality and farsightedness, admirably able to fully manage the winery, from the vineyard to the cellar.
Another Brunello in seventh position in our Top100 : Vecchie Vigne di Siro Pacenti. A wine that shows impeccable enology, the fruit of knowledge and wisdom. A very powerful, modern wine that we need to wait a while to be able to appreciate it at its full potential. A wine which is certainly not afraid of aging.
Oreno 2019 is the best Super Tuscan produced, finding strength and elegance from the balanced and decidedly favourable vintage in Valdarno. Giuseppe Caviola, directing the Aretine winery since 2010 as consultant enologist, has perfected the vision and works the vineyards used for the blend in the best possible manner, much to the joy of the Moretti family. (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot).
Stefano Amerighi produces the best Syrah di Cortona, in ninth place we find Maialino 2016, an intriguing wine, modern, smooth and decidedly complex with an open and direct character.
Closing the Top 10 a splendid Cerretalto, possibly the most famous vineyard in Montalcino, produced by Casanova di Neri it has character and power from the hot, rich year in Montalcino.
Vieris is the best white in Italy, dropping down to fifteenth position we find this Sauvignon Blanc which would be difficult to replicate and has gustatory persistency, it is produced by Vie di Romans in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
A few positions down theFiorduva by Marisa Cuomo, according to WinesCritic.com is the best ever.
Francesco Poli, a new discovery in the Trentino terroir produces the best sweet wine in Italy. Vino Santo Trentino Nobles 2005 is something more unique than simply rare.
Montepulciano brings three labels to the Top 100 for the first time : Poliziano Le Caggiole 2016, Contucci Pietra Rossa 2016 and La Ciarliana Vigna ‘Scianello 2016 are the best expressions of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Quintodecimo produces the best Taurasi in Italy. Vigna Grande Cerzito 2016 is an extraordinary wine in terms of enological precision and the silkiness in the matrix. Taming the Aglianico in Mirabella Eclano is certainly difficult but Professor Luigi Moio and his family manage it very well.
The S’Amfora 2019 is a revelation, a pure Petit Verdot (which is already a suprise) produced in Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto, refined under the sea at a depth of around 10 metres for 9 months. A very limited production but it isn’t only a marketing gadget, the wine produced is truly more unique than simply rare. And Podere San Cristoforo the producer tasted during the wonderful visit to the winery in Maremma Toscana this summer. Lorenzo Zonin owner and enologist gracefully touches the Petit Verdot and Sangiovese and enhances their characteristics.
We could go on forever but to synthesize Galatrona is the best wine produced from the Valdarno di Sopra territory, il Sasso from Piaggia the best wine produced in Carmignano.
Terre di Leone produces the best Amarone della Valpolicella with the 2011 Riserva, a dignified adversary to accompany it in the rankings is, without doubt, Ansari, the label produced by the Tedeschi family, on the market with the 2016 vintage.
Only one wine from Etna in the rankings this year, the best expression without a shadow of doubt is again produced from the fascinating 2016 vintage : Feudo Cavaliere Etna Bianco Millemetri 2016.
The Barolo denomination pays the price of a difficult year and brings only 4 labels into the classification : Bricco Fiasco from Azelia, Percristina from Domenico Clerico, Mosconi from Pio Cesare and the Cannubi Riserva 1752 fromDamilano.
Always consistent La Spinetta with the only Barbaresco in the rankings: Valeirano 2018.
We close a year of tasting that was rich and decidedly complex to manage, and we can’t wait to start tasting again in February 2022.
