In left Bank the best expressions of the tasting
The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux is a rainy vintage, certainly not among the best of the last few years.
Not all evils come to harm, however, in Bordeaux as in the rest of the world, in all areas of production of great wines that respect themselves, relaxed vintages, less nervous and ready sooner, can help to better understand the type of soils and often speed up sales avoiding having to inevitably wait for a vintage for a decade or sometimes even more.
Characterized by two important frosts before March and then on the days of April 7-8, the 2021 vintage immediately gave the Bordeaux producers a hard time. With losses of about 30% in the lower and more humid areas, the phenomenon inevitably also lowered the quality in some wines.
Climatic instability and humid climate then characterized the following 3 months until the end of July when the situation finally improved. Still difficulties pre-harvest with scattered and worrying rains that induced some products to harvest in some cases in advance compared to their own history. The month of October was excellent and rewarded those who played everything for everything.
This is precisely the key to reading the 2021 vintage in Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon made the difference in the blends where the composition is decidedly important; they benefit from it in Left Bank Margaux (in our reading perhaps more interesting than 2020), Saint Julien, Saint Estephe, Pauillac and Pessac Leognan.
The wines produced in these denominations have sapidity and good dynamism, which unfortunately was lacking in most of the wines tasted in this round of tasting organized by two of the most important Bordeaux Negociants: Joanne and CVBG.
There are those who speak of a vintage that recalls those of the past perhaps closer to the last century and those who during a splendid dinner approach it to the 2006 vintage or in some traits to the 2008.
Unfortunately we believe that the vintage is something new never seen before.
The rain distributed in the growth phases is perceived in the matrices and the choice to harvest when things got bad with pre-harvest rains is clearly visible in a heterogeneous picture in which the producers were divided in the interpretation of the vintage.
Many wines lack mid-palate, the tannic quality is composed and the extractions are right but there are evident signs of fragility probably also dictated by the increase in the pH of the wines caused by the rain that tends to decrease the acidity values of the grape berries.
So be careful to talk about a fresh vintage, it is more correct to talk about a rainy vintage. Nothing to do with the vintages of the 90s, where the acidity was certainly higher and sometimes the tannins less “smoothed” and with a more astringent character forced to wait for the wine for more than a decade but constituted in part the backbone of the matrices that this liked or not.
In the reading of the tasting we had the opportunity to taste over 200 wines and we highlighted a decisive authentic and essential character of the wines produced in the denominations of the Left Bank.
The best wine produced in the 2021 vintage in Bordeaux is Château Montrose, the complex blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot is the best vision of the vintage. It shows the right austerity in a vintage that can still give emotions but knows how to interpret and understand exactly where to push in the extractions of the different varietals. We award as the second best label of the tasting Château Pichon Baron it has tension and personality. Château Valandraud, it is his the wine produced in Right Bank that excites the most.
Beautiful for character and grace the ex aequo qualitative that brings Lascombes, Langoa Barton, Chateau Gloria, Chateau Canon and Clos Fourtet to the solidity and pleasantness that distinguishes them.
We will be able to enjoy them sooner and they will still have a long life thanks to the wise choices, the well-ripened grapes and the lively character. Even the well-dosed wood, in the right percentage of new wood used, will certainly contribute to their evolution.
After three really important vintages, a small stop comes in the vintages to be framed. This must not absolutely intimidate but must give an extra boost to the market because the quality remains absolutely indisputable and the Bordeaux producers absolutely know how to face the difficult vintages.
