Brunello di Montalcino 2017, the mastery of the producers comes out in a difficult year.

Not everything that shines is gold just as the wine production in 2017 is surely not to be forgotten.

Montalcino yet again shows itself to be the master of management during an anomalous year in Italy and produced harmonic, balanced wines of great workmanship.

The best consultant enologists are here, as are many of the most charismatic producers in the country and the pedoclimatic conditions are envied around the world. A perfect mix of factors which can overcome any climatic or epidemic adversary.

The 2017 vintage has been highly criticised due to the various difficulties it suffered starting with the bad frosts in April, very late and totally unexpected, then the prolonged drought (some areas didn’t get any rain for over nine months) and for the really high temperatures during July and August.

Not a perfect or easy year above all for the drastic decrease in yield with losses of up to 35-40% of the volume produced in the winery. Worse still was that during the tastings the wines made by a good part of the producers didn’t mirror the qualitative standards they are used to, so therefore less single varieties, less selections and obviously less bottles overall were produced.

In the chaos of that vintage however there’s one thing that constantly repeats itself every year: the great producers will do anything to make great wines and will adopt any lawful and ethical method possible to do so.

The 2017 vintage will be on the market from January 2022.

For the first time the previews of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium were brought forward in order to give the Italian and international journalists the opportunity to taste the vintage before it was released on the market, a trend that was started some years ago by the international wine critic gurus. Actually this makes a lot of sense and we are happy about this choice. The key is to try to bottle as early as possible in order to arrive at this date in the best form. Of course the wine cannot be forced and if it isn’t ready the producer can choose not to present their wines in the allotted time window.

The 2017 vintage is warm and generous; enveloping wines with good material which is well reflected in the matrices. The production of wines with dry or herbaceous tannins was strictly avoided, the major part of the producers hit the spot with the harvest and the shortened maceration times has allowed for the correct extraction of the poliphenolic components.

Overall the average quality is high, even more so than in more emblazoned years because it was impossible for the producers to experiment or try new things. This difficult year took no prisoners, it wasn’t forgiving.

For this reason the macerations were more or less similar on all sides, the barrels used were primarily used ones and the attention dedicated to the production was very high. Isn’t it true of all of us that we relax a little in easy times but give it our all in times of difficulty?

The wines produced are well dosed with strength, freshness and tannicity, the perception of the last being lower than usual and without doubt will make a large part of the national and international consumers happy.

Two wines impressed us for their precision of execution and brilliance of fruit during our tastings at the end of October. Simply beautiful, they had everything in the right place and confirmed that in the most difficult years the small productions and very careful selection of the grapes, grown on lands that are predisposed to hold water, can certainly create strong emotions with the production of wines over brief or medium-long periods.

La Magia Brunello di Montalcino Ciliegio and Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie are the two best wines produced in Montalcino in the 2017 vintage.

Il Ciliegio is a single vineyeard at 450 metres a.s.l. Harvested much earlier than usual, about two weeks earlier than the normal date and matured for three years in French oak barrels. For the first time the blend used one tonneau of 500 litres and another with wider ribs of 600 litres. A tiny production of 1100 bottles.

Madonna delle Grazie is the great wine produced by Il Marroneto. From a North facing vineyard of 1.68 hectares situated at 400 metres a.s.l. it produces a very elegant and decidedly complex wine. The vinification in Allier oak barrels and the high alcoholic fermentation temperature characterise the first phase of production of this label. The refinement for around 41 months in 25hl oak barrels and the next 10 months in the bottle is the second phase, producing a territorial expression of extraordinary workmanship.

Equally impressive are the wines produced by Padelletti, Tassi, Cortonesi and Cava d’Onice following on from the commendable work done by previous producers, to which we can add the ever consistent Fuligni, Giodo and La Rasina.

Great growth from Padelletti, a big change is finally paying off after some static years for this little producer from the Northern slopes of Montalcino. Il Colombaio di Tassi is a very precise wine, rich in identity, we can’t wait to get to know it better close up. Cortonesi consolidates the level of quality of their production, taking a step ahead of what we were used to. We are still in the Northern area (following Il Marroneto and Padelletti) and here young Tommaso has done everything in the best possible way both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Cava d’Onice as we know is one of the big ones in the denomination, confirming the ground-breaking work started in 2015 and showing everyone that it’s not just a shooting star but will continue to shine in the constellation of galactic wines in Montalcino from now on.

Wines to drink now, wines to drink over a qualitative apex of between 4-6 years, without doubt wines that will drink well after 8 or more years.

Thirty years ago the grapes didn’t mature and now we want to say that the year is too hot and dry?

I would definitely say no, let’s talk about the beauty of every single year and taste a lot of wines before we give risky judgements. Our sincere thanks for all the great work done at Montalcino by all the producers.
